The world's total production of chickpeas over's around 8.5 million metric tons annually and is grown over 10 million hectares. India grows chickpea on about 6.67 million ha area producing 5.3 million tones. With 35 per cent of world area and 27 per cent of production, India is the largest pulse producing nation. The area under chickpea in Maharashtra is about 13.95 lack hector and production is 13.01 lack tones. The area of Marathwada under chickpea in 2011-2012 is about 58800ha which producing about 61700 tons and the productivity is 1050 kg/ ha. Since 1990, a rise in the productivity of chickpea in India has been observed from 614 kg per hectare to 735 kg per hectare. It is most important food legume grown globally. India is the largest producer of this pulse contributing to around 70% of the world's total production. Desi type chickpeas largely dominate the ratio of production in India. Chickpea is grown in the drier areas of the country as they are best suited for its production. Chickpea producing states in India are: Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh.
