She's starting grade six, her best friend Jemima doesn't want to be friends any more, and Ali Jackson doesn't know why. Shell-shocked, and stuck in a slump, her analytical nature helps her to see through the hurt. Bouncing back, she finds focussing on little fix-it projects takes her mind off Jemima, and stops her feeling sad. While trying to help the teachers change some things she thinks need fixing, a series of misunderstandings makes Ali feel like no one is listening, and think everyone is against her. The whole thing nearly blowing up in her face, and with her heart now set on changing the world, she mistakenly believes she has provided the ideas for two major school projects but is not given the credit, and she goes straight to the Principal to complain. Turned away again, but still yearning to change the schoolyard dynamic and get her friend back, she launches one final offensive on the system. Organising a whole school sit-in protest results in Ali getting the teachers back on side, reconciling with Jemima, and fixing a whole lot of little things along the way.
