O knihe

At the turn of the millennium, Antony Rose is one of The Few still alive from the Battle of Britain. A widower, he is living out his twilight years alone in his Norfolk rectory. Company is limited to the butcher, baker and candlestick maker, and a couple of surly lifeguards at the local Leisure Pool. It's a fate he would not object to if he weren't always so cold and broke. The rectory is a tumbledown place but it's worth a million and gaining, which is why his alluring daughter-in-law, Rachael, who is impatient with her lot in life, conspires to put him into the Grosvenor rest home, owned by a pair of grim profiteers, Frank and Jane Simmonds.
Rachael, with her low-cut dresses and beguiling smiles, exercises great charm on the ancient fighter ace, and he doesn't realize until too late that his new neighbour, a rich and affable widow, with whom he has formed some attachment, is very closely related to Rachael's conspiracy. When he uncovers the plot against him, his protests are naturally rejected by all around, including the medical experts, as sure signs of demented paranoia. But Anthony is right. The conspiracy is real.
His only defence is his son, Alex. But Antony doesn't like his son. Antony is a brutally honest and teetotal curmudgeon, while Alex is a mild-mannered and mealy-mouthed Christian who likes a drink. Besides, Rachael is smarter than Alex and controls him, so no help there.
The fighter ace tries to duck and weave his way through this last dogfight, but the enemy is too wily and too strong for him this time, in his 79th year.
Once they have secured him in the Grosvenor, he foresees his death, but strangely without rancour.
But would he do it all again?
No thanks.
