Resistance to antimicrobial agents such as antibiotics, antifungal, antiviral, and anti-protozoal medicines, globally termed as ¿Antimicrobial Resistance¿ (AMR) has continued to be responsible for the increasing rate of patient¿s treatment failure, longer hospital stays and mortality. These medicines that were once effective in the treatment of infectious diseases such as urinary tract infections, respiratory tract infections, gastro-intestinal diseases, pulmonary infections, sexually transmitted diseases, meningitis, bacteremia etc. caused by pathogens are increasingly becoming very less effective. Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) is therefore a public health issue of a global health significance. As a matter of fact, The World Health Organization have projected an annual mortality rate of 10 million by the year 2050, if adequate measures are not put in place to combat AMR. Hence, the Adaptation of a Global Action Plan (GAP) on antimicrobial resistance in the May, 2015 World Health Assembly. This Publication is in line with the 2nd strategic objective of the Global Action Plan, which is; 'To strengthen the knowledge and evidence base through surveillance and research'.
