Khardah Khal is a storm water drainage canal, originated about 4.45 km South-East of Khardah Railway Station, West Bengal, India and flows to the river Hoogly. Since independence, a good number of chemical, metallurgical, fertilizer, dying and bleaching industries were established around the vicinity of the canal. Some of these industries are discharging effluents directly to the Khal at number of points. Since, the Khardah Khal is discharging to the river, it is necessary know the pollution status of the canal by determining physical, chemical and biological characteristics of the flowing water. This book elaborates results of seasonal water quality data of the Khal and demonstrates interpretation of data in a classical way with a view to estimate the extent of pollution load being received by the river through the Khardah Khal and to make suitable recommendations for the management. This book, thus attempts to cover a broad audience for instance, the interests of academicians as well as researchers engaged in water quality assessment practices, policy makers as well as regulatory agencies responsible for framing and implementing various environmental regulations respectively.
