Its Founder, Peter Cooper, a mechanic of New York, wished to give others opportunity for self-improvement, which he had been denied, and so far as lay in his power to help others help themselves.

During this long period of time instruction which was at first proper and necessary has become possible for the struggling from other sources; wherever such education has been supplied, other practical studies and methods have been introduced by the Cooper Union. It does not duplicate; it strives to give free instruction which cannot be obtained elsewhere, and to give instruction of a direct and practical nature. Furthermore, all the various schools of science and art, the reading rooms and lectures, are free to those profiting by them.

That the work of Cooper Union is appreciated and is necessary is proven by the fact that year after year from eight to ten thousand students apply, whereas its facilities, which are taxed to the utmost, can accommodate only about thirty-eight hundred.
