Beef, bible and bullets investigates the rise of Brazil's Jair Bolsonaro, Latin America's most right-wing president since the military dictatorships of the 1970s. Bolsonaro is an iconoclastic former army captain, famous for his politically incorrect conservative views, which have led to him being described as a Latin American Donald Trump. For a Brazilian population concerned by rising violence, falling living standards and widespread corruption, Bolsonaro has offered simple solutions: hard line repression of criminal gangs, a continuing crackdown on corruption and a return to conservative social values. Brazil's rapidly growing evangelical churches, military, police and wealthy agri-business groups have provided important backing. This book examines all these forces in detail, while arguing that Brazil's unique brand of right-wing populism has to be seen in the context of the hopeful but flawed left-wing project of the Workers Party of former President Lula da Silva. It also provides an assessment of the Bolsonaro government and examines the growing tensions between extremist and moderate conservatives. It suggests that the country's democratic institutions will face major new challenges in the years to come.
