Most of the present energy needs of the world are fulfilled by conventional non renewable energy sources comprised mainly of fossil fuels. The increasing cost of fossil fuels in the world market has shattered economy of several developing countries. In the years to come it is feared that no conventional fuel will be available anywhere in the world to overcome this energy crunch, the countries have to give an extra emphasis on indigenous and non conventional energy sources such as wind, solar, geothermal, tidal and Bioenergy. Biogas is important Bioenergy and it refers to a mixture of gases produced by breakdown of organic matter in the absence of oxygen. It is one of the most mature energy sources in terms of years of use and can be used for production of heat, electricity and mechanical energy. The present work has been undertaken to study importance of Bioenergy, Biomass, and Biofuels mainly Biogas. The emphasis is given on process of biogas production, microorganisms involved, design of biogas plant, operational problems, benefits and drawbacks of biogas technology. Project work includes the detail study of biogas production from wastes.
