The discovery of America, and the Reformation, which are the opening scenes of the drama of modern history, had brought forward Spain and Portugal as rivals to the Genoese, and had fired the English imagination by indicating a field for adventure, profit, and successful war which exactly suited the Anglo Saxon genius.
