A major problem with political humour is that mostly it has a brief currency, soon forgotten when overtaken by fresh nonsense. However, the disproportionate, absurdly long and sinister response to a man-made virus may prove to be an exception. For the sake of humanity and that of my grandchildren, I hope that the following pages will offer some reminders, if not insights, into what has gone wrong, and I hope my resort to humour will help steer survivors towards their own remedial responses.
Many a true word is spoken in jest, and the ridiculous deserves and needs to be called out for what it is.
Although much of my scorn has focused on the UK's Court Jester, for the wealth of opportunity he offers us each day, he is only the leader of a pack of global clowns, all trying to overtake him, with the aim of making sure the virus of fear lingers on, like the fart in a lift.
Until the culprits have been exposed, rounded up and confessed their sins of malign intent or stupidity, despatched from public office, and democracy and freedom of speech have been restored, we should resume our lives as they once were - art, literature, music, theatre, sport, proper science, and all the other stuff that defines us as a civilisation.
Everything will be alright in the end. And if it is not alright, it's not the end.
