The name Zhong Guo (literally "Middle Kingdom") is one of the oldest names that China has given itself and is still the name by which it refers to itself, although this may seem strange in the age of globalization. According to Cyrille J.-D. Javary, "this name dates back to a time when China remained the only great Asian power and when, for her, the outside world was only composed of barbaric countries, because without rites, but from which she had the kindness to accept tributes and tributes".
