These people also ate very simple food which consisted principally of figs, fresh cheese, Wheaten porridge, asparagus, green vegetables, all kinds of fruits, olive oil, ducks, and quails. Confectionery was forbidden and wine might only be taken in mode rate quantities. In Sparta, the state regulated the eating by instituting public meals.'
