Background & Objectives: A wide variety of analgesics are available today but unfortunately most have associated side effects like gastric irritation, nausea and vomiting. Its a challenge to overcome these adverse effects. This led to the discovery and development of new means to delivering the drug like transdermal patches, topical application etc. Diclofenac transdermal patch (Diclo-Touch) is a recently developed means of delivering drug, its use is studied widely in achieving pain control, though limited clinical studies are present in its use in maxillofacial surgery. Methods: 60 patients undergoing minor oral surgical procedures namely bilateral extractions were included in the study. Upon extraction on a side, transdermal patch was administered while a tablet was administered on extraction of the other side. Postoperatively patients were evaluated for pain, gastric irritability, vomiting, erythema and allergy. Results : Incidence of gastric irritability was significantly low in patients administered with transdermal patch than those taking oral diclofenac tablets.Interpretation & Conclusion: This study suggests the efficacy of transdermal patch is greater than oral tablets.
