In Pakistan poultry farms of Rawalpindi-Islamabad area have been found to be infested with commensal rodents (Rattus rattus, Rattus norvegicus and Mus musculus) and occasionally with Bandicota bengalensis, Millardia meltada and Nesokia indica. Factors like broken screens of windows, defective doors, cracks in floors and walls, poultry manure and wastes dumped at the farm premises and unmanaged wild vegetation facilitating rodents prevalence were studied. The farms, older than 10 years of age had poor structural conditions and higher rodent infestation. The farms managed by the owners had lower rodent populations as compared to those operated by the tenants, attributed to better efforts by the owners for repairs and maintenance. The rodent damages to eggs and poultry feed bags were calculated 0.001% (average 31 eggs per day per farm) and 5.9% (5 feed bags daily) in poultry farms. Samples of the poultry feed collected from poultry sheds and feed stores showed 37.5 ± 4.5 and 40.3 ± 6.4 no. /per kg contaminated with hairs(by count) and 10.5 ± 2.9 g/kg and 6.3 ± 0.8 g/kg (by weight).
