If a German boy were asked why he did not say: bie O a 116 instead of b a 6 {d a n 6, he very likely would answer: because it sounds funny, and it is wrong. Like him I want my pupil to tell the gender of the noun by the article that fits it, and not by its aspect under a catalogue of contingencies, which would make him go twice wrong before once right.
