To the text thus produced Dr. Furnivall himself added notes of the metres, and at his request the present writer supplied the usual Sidenotes, an interesting and pleasant task in the case of a work of so great variety and literary value. Dr. F urnivall's further com mands for the supply of an Introduction were far less agreeable. The T owneley Plays present many problems, more especially as to their language, which deserve to be dealt with by some learned professor, or at any rate by an editor of really wide reading and experience. The learned professor, however, could not be obtained. The difficulty of procuring an introducer threatened to postpone indefinitely the appearance of the new text (a consideration all the more serious Since the Surtees edition has long been difficult to procure); and as texts are far more important than introductions, it seemed better to be content to draw attention to a few points of interest rather than further to delay publication.
