His marriage broke up and his wife left suddenly, taking his two dear children with her. Living on a remote and isolated island intensified his sadness and he required treatment for depression. During this illness he started to write poetry which ranges through a wide spectrum of human experience -- from the anguish of separation, love, religion, death; and yet these epiphanies of human experience, often charged with emotion, are made more poignant through the oblique touches of humour.
