Going to Hell is a scary proposition for most of humanity. We will do anything to avoid this. It looms large in our subconscious and is tantamount to being exiled from those who care about us, leaving us as lost orphans fending for ourselves in a cold cruel heartless world. And the fear of this fate is so powerful, it rules our subconscious, rendering any part of us that might drag us down to the depths of Hades to oblivion. We block out any person, place or thing, which by association might make ourselves seem bad and candidates for eternal damnation.
This dynamic is a driving force in this story about people who are struggling to do the right thing but always seem to fall short because of some human flaw. But there is a greater force in play as well, one that helps us to be aware that God does not love us because we are good. He loves us because he is God and he wants us to know him, to know his love in our struggles, to know that every love song comes from God, and to know the power of his love will enable us to overcome. And it is this mysterious source of love that, after a lifetime of rejection, leads Annie home again, to a place where she is loved and accepted.
