Her fearless presence attracts three distinct suitors: gentleman-farmer Boldwood; soldier Sergeant Troy; and dedicated shepherd Gabriel Oak. Each, in different ways, unsettles her decisions and messes up her life, and tragedy happens, frightening the stability of the whole community.
