Panna National Park is situated in the picture SW-NE striking hill ranges of the Vindhyan system and forms the watershed - either wholly of partially of many streams to join the main system of the Ken, which has a northern flow towards Jamuna. In close proximity of the famous temple- town of Khajuraho, this park came into being in 1981 over an area of 543 sq km. Panna & Chhatarpur shooting reserves of erstwhile Panna , Chhatarpur and Bijawar states . Its history of nature conservation goes back to the year 1953 when an area of 308 Km. miles around Panna town was dedicated a wildlife sanctuary by the Vindhya Pradesh state. In 1994 it was declared a project Tiger reserve by Govt. of India.The whole area lies on the Vindhyan plateau with an average height of 350 meters. The area can be divided into four physio graphic region. They are the southern plateau, the upper Ken valley, the Panna range and the lower Ken valley. Most of the area of Panna National Park is drained by Ken river.
