Superconducting Fault current levels in land-based power systems are generally increasing because of the raise distribution system. Once the fault current limiter level exceeds the capacity of the existing protection equipment. In order to avoid excessively expensive equipment upgrade, many fault current limitation techniques have been investigated. The custom power device concept was introduced to distribution systems to improve the system performance. A Superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is a device generally used in transmission and distribution system to reduce the effect of unforeseen disturbances on the grid. For upcoming trend of smart-grid, SFCL would be one of the important devices used for the protection of the grid. In this paper, SFCL has been described for the protection of grid connected power system. The proposed system has been modeled in MATLAB/SIMULINK environment and transient analysis for three phase-to-ground fault at different locations of the grid has been performed with SFCL installed at different locations of the grid. Transient analysis without using SFCL is also performed to validate the effectiveness of the device in the grid.
