This year, 2022, marks the 52nd anniversary of CONAF's existence, which marks half a century of public policies for Nature Conservation in Chile.What has happened in this half century, in terms of Nature?Is it possible to know if public conservation policies are working?In these pages we do not make the analyses, nowadays fashionable, of bureaucratic superstructures, nor of political speeches, in these pages we show what was the situation (health) of the forest and Nature half a century ago, and what is the health of the Chilean forest today, in the year 2022. Obviously, if the health of nature is worse today than it was half a century ago, it means that all our work over the years has been useless; public policies have not worked. On the contrary, if the situation of Nature is better today, it means that our work has been effective, at least we have a result, a healthier (or less sick) forest to show.So what I do in this publication is to examine and evaluate what is the situation of nature in the last half century and what has been the effect of public policies in alleviating the situation of the Chilean forest.
