The window is an architectural element, commonly embedded in the wall, which allows air and light to enter the interior of the house. It also has the function of embellishing the facade of the building, as well as providing its users with the enjoyment of the landscapes in its vicinity. But for a long time, due to ignorance and the lack of innovative manufacturing techniques, windows have not always provided high thermal performance. As a result, energy expenditure on air-conditioning appliances has placed unnecessary burdens on their users, as well as high CO2 emissions, which are harmful to the environment. In this respect, this handbook deals with window conservation and repair methods for a wide variety of materials and types that are best suited to each specific situation. Also, diagnostic sheets have been prepared for the old windows located in the historical areas of the two cities, target of study, as well as laboratory tests, which aim at the correct selection of the windows to be applied, safeguarding the containment and transfer of thermal load, which may arise from these choices.
