O knihe
A defining moment in the history of politics in Cameroon was observed between the 2013 and 2020 legislative periods. These two elections catapulted women into the national parliament. The number of women elected more than double that of previous elections. A similar trend was observed in local councils where the number of elected women councillors and mayors witnessed a significant increase within the same periods. While gains in women¿s representation in politics have been widely celebrated, this book demonstrated that the concomitant effect on the promotion of gender equality and social transformation is governance remains questionable. Drawing from the experiences of women local government councillors in English speaking Cameroon of the 2013 to 2020 mandates, this book advocates that efforts at promoting women¿s representation in local politics must be complemented by strategies to create a conducive environment for women (likewise male politicians) to take up substantive roles that promote gender responsive policies, programmes and projects in local councils. The book is valuable to students and scholars of gender, politics and governance, and women¿s political representation.
