India is a country of vast geographical expanse. In the north, it is bound by the lofty Himalayas, the Arabian sea in the west, Bay of Bengal in the east and Indian ocean in the south, wash the shores of Indian peninsula, India has an area of about 3.28 million sq. km which is 2.4 percent of total geographical area of the world. India's arable land area of 15.97 crore hectares (39.46 crore acres) is the second largest in the world, after United States. Its gross irrigated area of 8.26 hectares (21.56 crore acres) is the largest in the world. India has grown to become among the top three global producers of a broad range of crops, including wheat, rice, pulses, cotton, peanuts, fruits, and vegetables (CSO, Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation, GOI, 2013). India has world second largest population 121 billion which is about 17.5 percent of the world population (Ministry of Home Affairs, Census of India, 2011). About 54.0 percent of work force still depends on Agriculture for their livelihood (Kapila, 2015).
