Trent in 1563, but since that date a solemnization by priestin Wo'pwisonoo of witnesses has been required in most Catholic countries. Ennd, however, refused to recognize the decree, and for centuries it was the accepted law in that country that no ceremony was necessary to create the marriage relation. This viev of the English lei-f was overthrown in 1844 by the case of Regina V. Millis, (10 Cl. Fin. 534, e Jur. 717, 17 Eng. Rul. Gas. 66) and subsequent legislation, but in this country the old rule had gained foothold before the decision of Regina v. Millis, and h 5 sub Sisted in nearly all jurisdictions as a part of our common law.
