This book highlights the development of women's education in colonial Orissa. Women's education has been one of the most contentious issues in India since the early nineteenth century. It brings together the debates on the subject including the issues of women during second half of the nineteenth and first of the twentieth century, role of colonial government for the growth of women's education, the relationship between education and politics during the early part of the twentieth century especially the stand of nationalist leaders regarding women's issues, rise of educated middle-class women and their involvement in socio-economic and political spheres.
