This feature of the age is intensified in a nation like our own, which is still largely absorbed in the development of material resources the almost bound less extent of which dazzles and bewitches us. In such an age and such a nation there is special occa sion for the careful study, in its relation to the Chris tian life, of the whole subject of money.

It will be observed that that candid mammon-wor shiper of mine was ready to give a reason for the faith that was in him. Money was his religion because it would do pretty much everything for a man, as near as he could find out. Not a bad reason, if true. That which can do everything for a man - supply all his wants, shield him from all perils, extricate him from all difficulties and satisfy all his cravings, and that for ever - does he not well to make it his god? Be yond question it is such a belief in the practically unlimited power of money - a conviction that it will do for men, if not absolutely all they care for, at least all that they care most for - which leads them to pursue it with such an eager and consuming pas sion. Ah! Cries the youth; money is the true Aladdin's lamp which brings everything to one's feet. A golden key opens all doors. Give me but money, and I can then indulge my appetites, gratify my tastes, carry out my projects, realize my ambitions, foil my enemies, command the homage of the multi tude. So he surrenders his whole time and all his powers to this one pursuit with an intensity, with an absorption, which will never be tempered till his eyes are opened to a sober estimate of the power, to a clear perception of the weakness, of money.
