The study of literature in context is now essential for modern students of introductory level English literature. Contextual factors shape our perception of how literary texts are made, and how they are read. This book introduces contextual approaches to literature to students and teachers through studies of fourteen major authors or texts from medieval to contemporary times. Each chapter focuses on work by selected writers, including Chaucer, Shakespeare, Jane Austen and Harold Pinter, and gives accessible, detailed accounts of it alongside further ways of thinking about issues. It is essential reading for those coming new to the study of literary context as well as more experienced readers.
The contributors are leading experts in their fields. Many, including the two editors, are past or present members of the Executive Committee of the Council for College and University English, the national subject association for English in higher education. The book has been produced in consultation with the UK Qualifications and Curriculum Authority.
Rick Rylance is Dean of the School of Arts and Letters and Professor of Modern English Literature atAnglia Polytechnic University, Cambridge.
Judy Simons is Dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at De Montfort University, Leicester.
