Some of the earlier poems, which will be found at the end of the volume would have been omitted but for the force of associations which the author felt unwilling to for-ego. The book contains nearly all the shorter poems he ever wrote, and also brief ex tracts from some of greater length, the insertion of which as a whole would have made the volume larger than would have suited his purpose.

Quite a number of those which are inserted were published, at the time they were written, in the local press, either here or on the other side of the Atlantic.
