The term learning disabilities was first coined by Samuel Kirk in 1963 at an association of parents in New York City. The U.S. Department of Education and Public Law 476-101 define learning disability as: A disorder in one or more basic psychological processes that impairs the comprehension or use of spoken or written language and may result in impaired ability to listen, thought Appear, speak, read, write, spell words or do mathematical calculations.
