Of how many men can it be said that they would have made their destiny their choice? We know some great men have said it and Quintus Horatius Flaccus was one of them. His was not a noble birth, for he was cradled in the huts where poor men lie; but as far as being ashamed of it was concerned, t was the last thought that ever entered his mind. After he had become the intimate as sociate of the first men of Rome the favorite of the Emperor and the companion of Maecenas he took pains on more than one occasion to call attention to the fact of his humble birth, and to let it be known that had he to begin life anew, he would not have it other wise.
