The aim of the study was to assess the effectiveness of monitoring and evaluation on teacher performance in secondary schools of Nyimba District in the Eastern province of Zambia. A mixed-method approach using an embedded mixed design was used. It combined quantitative and qualitative techniques of data collection and analysis. The sample comprised teachers and headteachers of selected schools and Education Standards Officers at District. Data was collected through questionnaires and interview guides. Qualitative data were analysed thematically. The statistical package for social sciences (SPSS version 20) was used to generate descriptive statistics such as frequencies and percentages to analyze quantitative data. The findings of the study revealed that teachers in the Nyimba district were only visited once per term by Education Standards Officers (ESOs) against the ideal situation which was that each teacher was to be monitored three times per term by the ESOs. The study established that some headteachers conducted monitoring and evaluation once per week, mainly ensured that lesson plans and schemes of work were up to date.
