Munchausen by Proxy (SMBP) Syndrome is characterized by the creation, exaggeration or induction of physical or mental diseases by the caregiver in an individual, in the absence of external rewards. This diagnosis is applicable to the abuser and the victim may receive a diagnosis of abuse. The actual prevalence of this disorder is unknown, and there is little information about the individuals with this diagnosis, who in most cases are not willing to collaborate with researchers who wish to explore the underlying causes of this behaviour. This work aimed to analyze current scientific knowledge regarding psychopathology, personality and psychosocial aspects of aggressors in cases of SMBP. Possible motivations, some of the proposed explanatory theories and diagnostic considerations will also be addressed. The treatment and prognosis will be explored briefly.Despite the difficulties associated with the diagnosis and psychological characterization of this group of patients, it is important to expand knowledge about their personality characteristics and relational dynamics in order to improve therapeutic interventions and minimize the suffering of victims.
