During a large part of three years I have had the privilege of receiving hospitality in many parts of Canada and in a large number of American States, from California and Washington in the west to Florida in the south, as well as in many cities in Eastern States, and during the same period have been able to observe American life in different social circles and from many standpoints. I may, therefore, claim to express in the following pages more than casual impressions of an experiment of immense importance to the public health and to prospects of social progress.
