Energy is critical, directly or indirectly, in the entire process of evolution, growth and survival of all living beings especially for human development and it plays a vital role in the socio-economic development and human welfare of a country. Energy has come to be known as a `strategic commodity' and any uncertainty about its supply can threaten the functioning of urban settlements, particularly in developing economies like in cities of India. Hence, it is crucial for the functioning of an urban settlement and the reliance on various energy sources has increased over time. The energy intensive nature of the urban settlement is reflected in the use of energy in the various consumption sectors, also higher dependence on commercial energy is observed in the urban areas as compared to non-commercial sources.
