This is the tribute of Zaida Kay, the friend and some time the companion of the Marquis de Lafayette, who, at the age of nineteen years, forsook his country and his family to embark his fortune and his life in the cause of the freedom and the liberty of a great people. But twenty-one years of age himself when be accompanied the American agents to Paris in the year t 776, Zaida Kay was present at Barren Hill and contributed not a little to General Lafayette's success upon that occasion. Thereafter, he returned to France, believing that he could be of some service to the Marquis, who had befriended him in a signal. Manner in America, at l was then believed by the American people to be in some grave peril by reason of his principles and their practice in Paris. The story of his adventurous journeys is not the least satisfactory page in the life of a man of sin gularly attractive character and indomitable courage.
