O knihe

Pierre-Auguste Renoir was a leader of the French Impressionists, a group of painters named for the way they dabbed bright colors on canvas, often blurring details to create a fleeting impression of the subject. Their aim was to capture the effects of light and color in the open air. Today Impressionism is greatly admired, but in Renoir’s day people hadn’t seen anything like it. Renoir suffered through years of cruel criticism and financial hardship before finally achieving success.
Throughout his seventy-eight years, Renoir was sustained by his family, his enthusiasm for life, and his love of pretty things. His paintings reveal a world of beauty and pleasure, where young mothers tend to smiling, rosy-cheeked children, and carefree couples flirt and enjoy themselves in city and country. In his later years, disabled by arthritis and unable to stand and paint, the artist had to be carried to his outdoor studio in a chair, and he needed help to insert a brush between his permanently curled fingers. Nothing, not even a condition that made painting so painful and difficult, could keep him from his easel. Until his final days, Renoir remained optimistic and persisted in making art that celebrated the joy of life.
