Excerpt from The Phonographic Manual
The illustrations introduced in the text of this work, are from Phonographic types, prepared expressly for it, and are the first of the kind produced in this country. They were cast by the Messrs. Wells, of this city, to whom the Phonetic cause is much indebted. These gentlemen have rendered valuable aid in the preparation of types for Phonotypic printing, since its introduction into this country, notwithstanding it has been attended with those sacrifices of time and means which usually accompany the introduction, and early practice, of any new art.
The method adopted in the presentation of the system, of placing the engraved exercises Opposite to the typic page which contains their explanations, and devoting each Opening of the book to the details of some specific principle, are advantages which, we think, will be appreciated by both teacher and student.
