O knihe

This book investigates the manifestation of freedom and related existential ideas in the novels of Meja Mwangi. The study interrogates his portrayal of characters within the paradigms of the fictional world he creates. Further, it interrogates if the author offers alternative possibilities for his characters and their circumstances. The study focuses on Going Down River Road, The Cockroach Dance and Striving for the Wind. It compares the manifestations of the character's actions with a view to assess how they determine their (character's) ultimate predicament and or freedom. Further, it analyses and interprets the images identified within Philosophical (existential) and theoretical (Marxist and humanistic) paradigms. Freedom and consciousness in the final analysis emerge as two indistinguishable aspects of Mwangi's fictional reality. The characters are free because of their consciousness, and in turn it is this that separates them from other things in the world. Unlike all other things, man is his freedom.
