O knihe

In the context of the global war on terror initiated by the George W. Bush administration after the 9/11 incident, many arrests and detentions of suspected terrorists were carried out. The situation was very similar in the UK and Europe as all countries launched an open war to eradicate terrorism. Subsequently, detention centers at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and Abu Ghraib in Afghanistan saw a large number of suspects being detained, without trial and tortured for long periods on the pretext of interrogations and extraction of vital intelligence information. Many innocent civilians fell prey to these operations then and are so falling even today. In this context, this book describes what goes on behind closed doors at these venues and the attempts made so far by international organizations including the ICRC in combating this global issue. Recommendations are given to reduce such illegal counter-terrorist operations and bring those responsible for human rights violations to book One of the major steps in that direction would be to clothe the regional human rights courts with criminal jurisdiction.
