La guerre voulue et provoquée éclata: Monterey, san-francisco furent saisies. Le commodore Stockton arriva en Californie, la traita comme un pays cônquis le drapeau américain fut hissé à Monterey, le 7 juil let 1846. Les hostilités furent courtes, le traité du 7 août 1848 les termina et rétablit la paix entre les etats-unis et le Mexique. Les Américains, de plus en plus nombreux en Californie, préparèrent une Consti tion qui. Ressemblait dans ses grandes lignes à celle de l'etat de New - York; elle fut adoptée le 13 novem bre 1849. La Californie fut définitivement admise comme - Etat par le Congrès de Washington, le 9 sep tembre 1850.
