The salmon canning industry 'of the Columbia is located along the banks of the river where the fish may be canned as soon as possible after they are caught, as the value of canned salmon depends upon its freshness at the time of can ning. The industry along the river has grown to enormous proportions, though it is said not to be so large as the industry is in Alaska, which is the largest in the world and has produced in the last twenty years over six hundred million pounds of canned salmon. The canning industry began along the Columbia about 1870 at Eagle Cliff.
