He early was devoted to the ferrite of his country in the Navy, and onthe 25th of February.1761, was made a' Captain in the thip the Valiant; on the 24th of September 1787, he was advanced to the polt of rear-admiral; became Vice Admiral in 1793, and Admiral of the Blue in 1795. He was foon notioed by the late Lord Keppel, and was with him at the taking of Havanna 'and when that Nobleman was made an Admiral, he chofe his friend Duncan for his Captain, and he was afterwards one of the Mem bers on his Court Martial.
