Excerpt from The Direct Ancestry of the Late Jacob Wendell, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire: With a Prefatory Sketch of the Early Dutch Settlement of the Province of New Netherland, 1614-1664
IN the introductory sketch ofthe period included within the years 1614-1664, it has been essayed brie¿y to portray the sway of the United Provinces over New Netherland, the limits of which originally extended from Chesapeake Bay to Cape Cod, but were subsequently greatly modified. At the end of that time, embracing a period of half a century, the in¿uence of England had become preponderant in America, and the rapidly growing commercial importance of the valuable territory held by the Dutch did not escape the notice of that power. The English Crown, un der cover of enforcing the Navigation Law of, 1663, resolved to add the coveted region to its dominion, and the following year Charles and his ministers seized the province, the present site of three great states of the American Union.
In presenting the genealogical data contained within these pages, the author desires to state that this little volume does not purport to follow the history of the various branches of a name whose ramifications are both numerous and extensive. It is designed simply to condense in a convenient hand-book for genealogical reference, the record of the direct ancestry of the late Jacob Wendell, of Portsmouth, New Hampshire. That gentleman, the author' S grandfather, of revered memory, deceased August 27, 1865. He was descended in the sixth generation, through johannes, 1649, from evert jansen wendel. Of Albany - the First Settler of the name, who came to America in 1640 - by his first wife, Susanna Du Trieux.
The descendant of any of those early families who settled along the banks of the Hudson under the gentle rule of Holland, recuiting with honest pride to more than two centuries of honorable lineage, realizes his indebtedness to past generations. And as he searches their annals, inscribed in quaint netherland-dutch, in the very curious and interesting Notarial Papers, he adequately appreciates the services rendered to his kinsmen by Professor Jonathan Pearson, of Union College. The laborious and studious researches of this gentleman among the Dutch manuscripts at Albany, and the result of years of patient investigation, are exhibited in his valuable contributions for the genealogies of the First Settlers of that ancient borough. Of the material aid furnished by these the author has gladly availed him self, and additionally of the courtesy of Professor Pearson, who has kindly allowed the proof sheets of this pamphlet to receive his examination and approval.
