The cold war began in the early years after World War Two. Established in 1947, the United States Air Force became a separate arm of the military and the transition from propeller driven aircraft to jets is the focal point of the story. Tommy Chandler and his English wife, Lady Caroline, are involved with these developments. When the Korean war breaks out, Tommy is ordered to take a squadron of the new jet fighter, the F-86 Sabre, to fight in that war.
