O knihe

Is it possible to imagine what it was like to visit New York City one hundred and forty years ago? Early photographs help, of course, but they can only tell part of the story and there is another source of contemporary information that is often overlooked .... travel guides.

Guidebooks were published in the second half of the nineteenth-century that explained where to go, what to see and how to get there. They would have been invaluable to visitors then and today provide a fascinating insight into what New York had to offer and help us on our imaginary trip to the city.

This book combines extracts from a guidebook published in 1881 with photographs taken in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. The guide is remarkably detailed and includes a potted history of the City; information about places of entertainment and cultural interest, transport services, charities, clubs and institutions; ship and ferry schedules and much more. It comprises two parts; text, illustrations and advertisements from the original guidebook followed by twenty-three photographs from glass, 'magic lantern' projection slides. The text and photographs complement each other and enable us to travel back in time to this remarkable city in the final decades of the nineteenth century. I hope you enjoy the journey.
