Kanpur is characterised by diverse physical features unlike the other cities of India. It is the biggest and most important industrial city of Uttar Pradesh (India). Kanpur has undergone tremendous changes as the growth in population (35%) from 1991-2001 has put tremendous pressure on physiography such as water supply, sewerage solid waste etc., which has elevated the complexities to manage the lucid functioning of water supply and sanitation in the city. The present work attempts to point out the diverse issues which are being faced by different entities mainly Kanpur Jal Sansthan (KJS) and U.P. Jal Nigam (UPJL) to maintain the hygiene of the city. The urban hydrology of the city is divided into eight chapters respectively dealing with the various issues ranging from the literature related to the research work, the physical and the geographical information related to the locations, physiography, climate impact on physiography, demography of the area, urbanization and land use, availability of water, drainage system status of sewage, slum settlements their supply and storage of water, and the downstream and upstream pollutants of the Bhaironghat pumping station.
