O knihe

In 1929, during the repair and restoration work at Istanbul's Topkapi Palace, German scientists Gustav Adolf Deisman and Paul Köhl, under the direction of Dr. Edmam, found a fragment of an ancient map executed on gazelle skin parchment. The map was made in Chelibola in 1513. After reading about the discovery of the map in the Illustrated London News, U.S. Secretary of State Henry L. Stimson contacted United States Ambassador to Turkey Charles Sherryl and asked for an investigation to find the original Columbus map. He suggested the "Columbus Map" should be somewhere in Turkey. He orders the U.S. Ambassador to Turkey to start looking for the map. However, despite the full assistance provided by the Turkish authorities, no results were achieved. Many experts tend to conclude that Piri Reis's map did not exist in one copy, i.e. other cartographers also used it. It appears that several copies of the map were available in Alexandria. After the fall of Egypt, they were taken to different regions. Thus, maps describing Antarctica found themselves in several countries. It seems to me that Gergard Mercator, Oronteus Phinius, and Philip Boische also had them.
