It abhors, as barbaric, the cruelties of preceding ages while, at the same time, justifying its own cruelties using current, fashionable logic. Modern democracy claims to have overcome the tyrannies of kings and dictators. Yet it is, actually, run by tyrannies; that of the "majority" at best but, more usually, that of the most vocal, disruptive or best publicised minority.
